Mizuno Neo Vista 3 Review: The Chosen One

Brooks Ghost 18 review: pros and cons of the shoe
PROS CONS
+ Bouncy
+ Responsive and energetic
+ Two foams
+ Improved upper
+ Nimble and soft ride

Not made in size 15
Pricey

Not long ago considered safe and predictable (see: boring), Mizuno continues to refresh their lineup with great results, significantly improving long-time pairs like the Wave Rider and introducing several innovative premium models within the past few years. One of many standouts is the Neo Vista, a nimble, plated super trainer designed to provide a bouncy, energetic ride. Did my first experience with the shoe live up to the internet hype? I detail my experience through 40 miles, in this Mizuno Neo Vista 3 review.

Allow me to start off this review with a confession: I ran in a size 14 shoe. [Gasp!] I know, I know: it’s blasphemous for The Size 15 Runner not to run strictly in size 15 kicks…and to refer to himself in the third person. But desperate times call for desperate measures. That desperate measure? Stooping down to the level of sizing down to size 14 for the Mizuno Neo Vista 3. Before I’m crucified by fellow size 15’ers, I can explain my apparent sin. The Neo Vista isn’t made in size 15. That’s right: size 14 is the largest size available. But while the smaller fit is a bit iffy, the ride is undoubtedly great.

Ride

The Neo Vista 3 is truly the first of its kind. No, really: there are two foams in the midsole…with the same name! Has any other running shoe ever had two identically named midsole foams made of different material? There’s a layer of nitrogen-infused ENERZY NXT foam (TPU Version) above a bottom layer of…you guessed it…ENERZY NXT (EVA Version). A full length Wave Plate is doubleteamed in between the foams, rounding out quite the threesome…of midsole materials. It all adds up to an uber-soft underfoot feel without being mushy.

Mizuno’s signature Smooth Speed Assist geometry is designed for more efficient running, and that’s exactly what it delivers. There’s a prominent heel bevel that aids in smooth, forgiving landings while the aggressive forefoot rocker adds a propulsive heel-to-toe transition.

I’m surprised to see the shoe has a 44.5 mm measurement in the heel, because it doesn’t feel nearly as tall, a testament to the way the shoe rolls through each stride. While undoubtedly a max cushion experience, the nimble ride makes you feel closer to the ground than its stack height would suggest. And despite the gigantic stack height (36.5 mm in forefoot) the weight isn’t compromised, coming in at an impressive 9.4 oz (266 g) for men’s size 9 and 7.8 oz (221 g) for women’s size 8.

Mizuno Neo Vista 3: running in the shoe

I feel like I’m gliding in this shoe. This is one of the most pleasant underfoot experiences found in a super trainer. Even with the gigantic stack, the ride is crazy responsive and super stable, thanks to the combo of the Wave Plate adding rigidity and a base of EVA foam. It’s also quite bouncy. And it’s light enough to help you push the pace and maintain it for mile after mile.

As a result, long runs are a breeze in this shoe, as evidenced by the 17 miler I easily tackled at 7:50/mile pace despite running on low energy after still recovering from a previous week of late nights and not so healthy eating. Vacation will do that to a runner. You know, Belichick may have been on to something with that whole “no days off” thing. What’s that? UNC went 4-8 in his debut season? Oof. Maybe he oughta take some time off…for good.

Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that the Neo Vista looks stunning. The smooth ride matches its sleek aesthetic; it’s easily one of the most attractive shoes of the year…or any year.

Uses

While not a racing shoe, you can use the Neo Vista 3 for just about every other type of run. It’s light and propulsive enough to tackle some light speed work while its high level of cushioning and softness make for a nice option for easier days. It’s an excellent super trainer that can handle a variety of paces and distances, from daily miles to aforementioned long runs. It’s a reliable pair I keep coming back to during marathon training.

Upper and Outsole

The one-piece knit upper is quite comfy and despite the lack of a traditional tongue, secures my feet in place nicely. It’s clear the shoes’ previous issues with foot lockdown and heel collar discomfort were addressed this time around. The sock-like upper is surprisingly breathable and ample padding in the heel collar offers a plush, comforting feel.

I don’t typically like non-traditional uppers like this one, but I gotta say, I have no complaints with this upper, other than being a bit snug due to the smaller size 14. But that’s a “me” problem.

Using the same carbon rubber as the Wave Rider 30, the X10 outsole offers great durability that could last longer than some other super trainers’ less-substantial outsoles.

Price

$200 is steep for any shoe, there’s no getting around that. Is it justifiable? It depends. Just like any purchase, you have to think about what your potential use cases would be. If you’re looking for a dual-foam shoe with a plate that can be your long run shoe and a daily trainer, the Neo Vista easily fits the bill. Additionally, with the robust rubber coverage, you can expect better durability than most carbon plated shoes. Of course, if you’re looking for a shoe you can race in, this won’t be the best option, as there are much lighter pairs with even more propulsive rides for faster turnover.

Conclusion

Among the top super trainers available, the Neo Vista 3 is a shining example of Mizuno’s renewed commitment to transform their shoe lineup into one of the most well-rounded in the industry. The result is a fun, energetic pair you won’t regret lacing up for just about any run.

The Neo Vista 3 is now available on Mizuno’s website.
